Mathias Depardon – Moving Sand

6 October 2023 to 21 April 2024

Moving Sand

Sand is the most consumed resource on earth after fresh water. We often talk about the end of oil and water, but sand is an underestimated natural resource, which is disappearing with massive consequences on the environment. Sand mining is the largest mining company in the world, responsible for 85% of all mineral extraction. It is also the least regulated, probably the most corrupt and environmentally destructive resource. Sand covers much of the Earth’s surface, but demand for the resource is so high that illegal mining has become a global problem.

Mathias Depardon

Born in 1980 in Nice, Mathias Depardon tends towards a documentary approach which is part of a temporality favoring immersion in subjects revealing important socio-economic, political and ecological questions in territories under tension. In Moving Sand the photographer focuses on sand, the second most consumed natural resource in the world and its massive extraction in different countries including India and Cape Verde.
